VERSION 1.0.10    2022-05-16

Download and installation

The software has no installation routine, it is like a portable version. It will create a few INI files in the folder where you start it. When run from a write protected device, it will create the files in the safe application workspace managed by Windows. See the Youtube video about downloading and installing.

When you download the software sometimes you get a warning like ‘is not commonly downloaded and may be dangerous’. With the caret you can choose ‘Keep’ to download the software. This is just a standard warning by your browser. Then, when you run the software, Microsoft Smartscreen will also warn you (only once) with the message ‘Windows protected your PC’. When you select ‘More info’ you can choose to run the software.

Why are these messages generated?

Some users asked questions about these warnings. It is a safety mechanism of Windows based on signing. Because the MP4Workshop is not CodeSigned, your Microsoft Defender might give a warning like ‘Windows protected your PC’ when opening. This is to warn you for non-codesigned software. However, CodeSigning is an expense that many freeware writers cannot make. There is no form of free signing like SSL certificates (see codesigningstore.com/free-code-signing-certificate for an explanation).

For many freeware writers this is a pity because it can make people hesitant. Therefore I also describe this issue on this download page and in the Youtube video about installation (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2R9Rfjib9ns). What you can always safely do is download the software, and then submit it to VirusTotal. This uses dozens of virusscanners to check a file. When you submit MP4Workshop, you will see that not one of these scanners will raise a flag. There are no viruses in MP4Workshop. After scanning you can confidently run the software.

Version history

Version 1.0.10: 2022-05-16 Fixed anomaly: the system file-time property (external metadata) stamped to the written files deviated by the number of hours in the time-zone offset from UTC. Internal metadata was correct, so it had no effect on sorting of software that uses the internal metadata. However, the result could look confusing in the file explorer. This property is now written correctly. But note: file time is based on UTC, and what is shown in Windows is corrected for your location.
Example 1: You set date-time of a movie to GMT+2, and you know it was filmed in time-zone GMT+1, and daylight saving was in effect (e.g. in summer, so local time was GMT+2). Then, when you check the result in summer time on a computer in the same time-zone, the system file time property will reflect the exact time you have applied as correction. However, example 2: if you went on holidays to Australia, and set file times of your videos to the correct local time and time-offset during that holiday, the file times on your computer will appear different if your watching them back in your home location in another time-zone.
Other change: I increased the size of the button above the ‘Source time’ column in the lower panel (‘Target -desired date-time’). This button can be used to select the reference time as is described in the manual on this website. I increased the size so it is clear it is a functional button, not just an ornamental icon.

Version 1.0.9: 2022-04-04: Added more help in the form of hints to the column headers in time-source select grid.

Fixed bug: file-time created showed file-time modified.

Version 1.0.8: 2022-02-26 Ability to set a grey-out level for text that is not the focus in the working grid. This makes focusing on changes easier. Added button to open Geotag in Google maps via default browser. More robust validation of entered location string. Fixed visual bug of drawing wrong reference time cell after deletion from list. Less clutter in the Process tab. Fixed: file create dates before 1980 were written correctly, but were not shown correctly when reading (were shown as N/F). Fixed the sometimes ugly unintentional multi-line selected colors. Made the auto-height adjustment of preview optional; it could cause annoying ‘jumping’ of the panels below the preview. Better info panels including hints for main-menu items. Back-up of geotag list to prevent accidental loss. Internal change: now using VLC player for preview of jpg as well.

Version 1.0.7: 2022-01-31: More changes to make the GUI more consistent. Fixed bug with clearing of geotag. It is now actually removed when chosen so.

Version 1.0.6: 2022-01-26: I’ve have been working with default zoom setting in Windows all the time. Just found that the application was not DPI aware. Meaning it can look real messy when you have your settings in Windows to display larger fonts or an overall zoom factor. This update should fix this. Will check if there are other things left regarding this problem.

Version 1.0.5 2022-01-24: Now able to process (rarely encountered) ffmpeg metadata that is stored inside the udta atom. Fixed minor visual bugs with grid index. Fixed bug copying from Hex window when no text selected. Added show-no-more option to process-complete dialogbox. Remember paused status of video when switching tabs. Added more metadata tags or keys. Improved GUI of Process tab. Improved layout of the geotag tab. Added option to automatically open processed files after saving. Solved issue with reference-time file removal that caused ugly time changes when selecting new dates afterwards. Synchronised sorting in the grids.

Version 1.0.4 2022-01-07: Fixed bug: XMP part of jpg was not written in previous versions
Version 1.0.3 2021-12-28: Removed the open/select button to make interface more logical
Version 1.0.1 2021-04-25: Less clutter in GUI and built-in tutorial call-outs for changing timestamp.
Version 1.0.0 2021-03-25: First published version
